About NAMCOB

Goal

Our goal is to conserve seabirds on the Namibia coast and in its marine exclusive economic zone, with emphasis on the most threated species.

Mission

The mission of NAMCOB is to have a net positive impact on biodiversity and the sustainability of the Namibian marine environment through the protection and conservation of threatened seabirds. The project is based in Lüderitz but also focuses on mitigation measures against threats facing seabird species along the entire Namibian coastline.

NAMCOB will work with the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources to support conservation activities including monitoring of key seabird colonies, protected area monitoring, oil spill preparedness, and community engagement and awareness activities. Increasing in-country capacity will assist government with urgent research necessary for the management of the Namibian Islands' Marine Protected Area (NIMPA), especially through accurate census counts of important seabird populations that address data gaps in understanding population trends. Analysis of this data helps to assess the overall health of the marine ecosystem.

NAMCOB is constituted as a voluntary association under Namibian common law.

Main Objectives

  • Enhance readiness and efficacy in addressing seabird-related crises and emergencies through comprehensive preparedness and response strategies.
  • Rehabilitate seabirds, chick rearing (including egg incubation) and, if necessary, breeding programmes.
  • Strengthen monitoring, research, and data management efforts to advance the Foundation's overarching conservation objectives.
  • Provide training for people to handle, care for, raise and monitor seabirds and other coastal and marine species, while also imparting oil spill response procedures, safety and other relevant skills that will benefit conservation and the Foundation's goal.
  • Provide environmental education and cultivate public awareness which informs and encourages people to develop positive habits which contribute towards a healthy coast and ocean, and to the wildlife dependent thereon.
  • Implement innovative fundraising strategies and revenue-generating activities and project administration which support the objects of the Foundation.
  • Inform and influence local and global consciousness and action, promoting responsible governance of marine ecosystems and the conservation of marine animals that depend on it, and working towards harmonious coexistence between people, corporate business and marine life and habitats.
  • Work in support of the conservation and management of the Namibian Islands' Marine Protected Area.
